Day 52

Driving out of Espanola, we hooked up with the Trans-Canada Highway to head west. With a derth of communities, any signs of life were appreciated, and we even passed through one town with a McDonald's (the only one we've seen for hundreds of miles...)

Turning briefly south, we traversed the narrow bridge to St. Joseph's Island. Once we reached the south coast of the island, we visited Fort St. Joseph, the ruins of the western-most British outpost, it was destroyed by the Americans in 1814. The rangers at the interpretive center were most hospitable, giving the kids a private tour, including a trunk full of old uniforms to try on. The walk through the ruins gave us a good view of the entrance to Lake Huron, as well as a chance to stretch our legs.

Back on the road, we headed on to Sault Sainte Marie, the "Soo" to the locals. The kids squeezed in a round of mini-golf while Mom made dinner.

After dinner, we built a campfire, roasted marshmellows and sang songs before the tired campers hit the hay.
