Day 30- June 14

A family day in Merrick with visits from Jonathan, David, Jill, and Great-Grandma Betty. Sammy found plenty of games to play including a challenging game of Dominoes with Grammy.

The kids enjoyed the undivided attention from their doting uncles.

Great-Grandma Betty was her charming self while beaming proudly at three generations of Zimmerman's.

Day 31 - June 15

A visit to Merrick would not be complete without a round of golf, so while the boys were off for a "quick nine," Grammy and I entertained the kids.

The evening brought yet more excitement as Dan and I got to go out for dinner. We went almost all the way around the block to the local Japanese restaurant. We gorged ourselves while reveling in the peace and quiet. Returning home we held a screening of Mary Poppins to the delight of all, especially Sam and Sarah...

Day 32 - June 16

The sun once again rose to greet us with heat and humidity. Job one was a costco run to develop some pictures and stock up on a few things.

Next we tried a trip to Old Bethpage Village, but discovered that they were closed on tuesdays. Reverting to our back-up plan we opted for a round of mini-golf and lunch at Friendly's.

We spent the afternoon in search of summer pajamas for the kids to try and beat the heat. The evening was punctuated by the most severe thunderstorms we've encountered to date. The rains were pounding the roof of the RV, but luckily the kids slept straight through.

Day 33 - June 17

An adventurous breeze ruffled through the continuing heat wave, so we struck out for the day. First a ride on the Long Island RailRoad, where Sarah got to ask for "Two tickets please."

Then we made our way through Penn Station for Sam's first ride in a "T.A.X.I." to the Central Park Zoo. The kids romped across the lily pads, down the rabbit burrows, and across the goat's playground in the Children's Zoo. Then we headed over to the seals, polar bears, and penguins who definitely have the right approach to staying cool.

Following in the grand tradition of Little Critter in "Just Me and My Mom", we retraced our steps home with two happy and tired explorers.

Day 34 - June 18

Deciding to give Old Bethpage another chance, we returned to the park site, this time to be greeted by numerous school buses. Being intrepid travelers we decided to push onward and visit the village.

Sam made friends with the shopkeeper and hat maker but was disappointed that the blacksmith wasn't working. We surmised that he must be out of town getting new supplies of iron.

After a short break for lunch, we took a quick trip over to Jones Beach. And we do mean quick since within minutes of arriving at the beach, it was cleared due to an approaching thunder and lightning storm.

A sudden inspiration had us bring home a few sandpails of beach sand, which the kids turned into an impromptu sandbox at Grammy's house.
